Protein and Protein Powder Without Added Sugar

Protein plays an important role in sports nutrition because it contributes to muscle building, promotes regeneration and strengthens the immune system. A protein-rich diet also ensures a long-lasting feeling of satiety, which supports calorie-reduced diets and weight management and minimises the loss of muscle mass. Because high sugar consumption is related to an insulin release, which hinders fat loss and increases the risk of metabolic diseases in the long term, athletes and people who want a healthy, balanced nutrition pay attention to low-sugar or sugar-free protein products.

Proteins from SPONSER: high quality and almost sugar-free

Numerous protein powders and supplements from SPONSER with a high protein content have no added sugar and therefore an extremely low sugar content. Nevertheless, the nutritional table lists minimal sugar contents because certain ingredients naturally contain carbohydrates and sugars. For example, whey protein naturally contains lactose, i.e. milk sugar. Plant-based protein sources such as peas or rice also contain varying amounts of carbohydrates such as starch and sugars. However, certain protein supplements contain sweeteners instead of sugar to enhance taste . The following sweeteners are used in SPONSER protein powders: sucralose (in all flavours of WHEY ISOLATE 94 except neutral, VEGAN PROTEIN, LOW CARB PROTEIN SHAKE, PREMIUM WHEY HYDRO, WHEY TRIPLE SOURCE PROTEIN, SENIOR PROTEIN, PREMIUM PLANT PROTEIN) as well as acesulfame K and neotame (MULTI PROTEIN).

Our best-selling proteins: sugar-free or almost sugar-free

WHEY ISOLATE 94 neutral contains no added sugar or sweeteners and, when prepared with water, has less than 0.1 g of sugar (lactose) per serving. Our WHEY ISOLATE 94 in chocolate flavour – a whey of the highest quality and biological value, low in fat, low in carbohydrates and lactose-free – also contains only 0.1 g of sugar per serving. The same applies to WHEY TRIPLE SOURCE PROTEIN Swiss Chocolate, VEGAN PROTEIN Chocolate and SENIOR PROTEIN Chocolate. MULTI PROTEIN in vanilla or banana flavour contains just 0.8 g of sugar when mixed with water, while the purely plant-based PREMIUM PLANT PROTEIN contains 0.3 g of sugar per shake.

FAQs about protein powder without sugar

Certain protein sources such as whey protein, rice protein or pea protein naturally contain carbohydrates and/or sugars that cannot be completely removed technologically. However, depending on the product chosen, the amount is negligible at 0.1 g of sugars per prepared protein shake. Our WHEY ISOLATE 94 powder in neutral flavour, for example, contains <0.1 g of sugar per 100 g of powder!
«Sugars» refer to simple and double sugars (mono- and disaccharides) that are legally defined as such and occur also naturally in the ingredients or have been added – these include, for example glucose, fructose, lactose, sucrose, isomaltulose, trehalose and maltose. Even if no sugar has been added in the traditional sense, these types of sugar can be detected analytically and must be declared accordingly under carbohydrates with «of which sugars».
No. According to Swiss food law, a product may be labelled «no added sugars» if no sugar or sugars-containing ingredients such as honey, fruit juice concentrate or syrup have been added during production. However, it may contain naturally occurring sugars, such as lactose in dairy products or fructose in fruit.
Sugar in the form of carbohydrates plays a central role in replenishing glycogen stores. Intense endurance exercise depletes the energy stores in the muscles. To support recovery, our recovery products (PRO RECOVERY or PROTEIN SHAKE) contain a combination of carbohydrates and proteins in a ratio of approximately 3:1 to 4:1. The carbohydrates – including sugars – improve the absorption of amino acids in the muscle cells and aid protein synthesis; both are important factors for rapid recovery and muscle regeneration.
SPONSER uses modern sweeteners such as steviol glycosides from stevia or sucralose to optimise the taste without significantly affecting blood sugar levels. These sweeteners are calorie-free, well tolerated and have a pleasant, sweet, natural taste.
Officially, the term «suitable for diabetics» no longer exists and must not be used on food products. Diabetes is not about completely avoiding carbohydrates, but about the amount per intake and time unit that is appropriate for the individual patient. It is therefore primarily important to know the carbohydrate and sugar content of a food in order to be able to consume it appropriately. Many of our protein products are easy for diabetics to use in combination with a balanced, healthy diet due to their low carbohydrate content, as there are no sugars to consider. It is advisable to carefully check the exact nutritional information for each product and flavour to ensure that a product meets individual nutritional requirements, for example for a vegan nutrition or a low-carb diet. The list of ingredients also provides information on whether SPONSER sports nutrition products are suitable for people with allergies who follow a lactose-free or gluten-free nutrition.
