L-carnitine is a vitamin-like nutrient that has an important function in fat metabolism, insofar as it allows the transporation of fatty acids to mitochondria to provide energy. L-carnitine is therefore used in connection with diets as well as in endurance sports. Athletes need fatty acids for energy use but take L-carnitine also to promote recovery.
L-carnitine is mainly absorbed through meat (lat. carne: meat). A vegetarian or vegan diet, or other diets poor in meat, result in a significantly lower carnitine muscle content and supplementary L-carnitine intake may be considered.
